With Words
Jami Macarty

Mesquite cardinal the sun showers the belly marigold and cheapens the wind

Calloused table-candle burns redundantly in the sun

The day comes back in cars

I see them but they do not see me

Bare leaves in sand most flattering to feet

I stand in the desert metropolis of thorns

Banjo the many ears of the prickly pear

The neighbor’s music interferes with my music

Called abruptly to my knees I have come here to say

I want to live and take up with words
